The Scam Gram – How to Protect Your Account Information
As scammers step up their game to gain access to your bank accounts, there are different strategies you can use to protect your bank account information from them.
- Create Strong Passwords – A strong password means a strong defense against hackers and scammers. Make your passwords long and complex, but something you will remember. Don’t use the same password for every login you have.
- Use Multi-Factor Authentication – Multi-Factor Authentication is a form of password security that requires an additional credential, such as a one-time code, to sign-in. This extra security can be especially important on your bank accounts.
- Don’t Give Your Card Information Out – You get a call from someone asking for your debit card number. Ask yourself, “what do they need this for?” or “is this someone I trust with the information”. If you aren’t sure, find a different payment method to ensure your debit card isn’t compromised. Don’t give out your Online Banking information to others. This allows them to easily access your account information.
- Don’t Click on Links in Email or Texts – If you receive a text message or email stating there is a charge on your bank account that needs approval, don’t click on the link or call a phone number provided. Review your bank records or call your financial institution to see if the charge truly is on your account. Then call your financial institution directly to dispute the charge, if needed.
- Stay Alert – Every day consumers are falling for scams unknowingly as the scammers have spent years researching and testing tactics to trick victims. Keep up on the latest scam trends and if something sounds too good to be true – it probably is!
